SONOMA MOUNTAIN POND DESIGN & BUILD

Project Details

In 2011, PCI collaborated with architects Backen and Gillam on the transformation of a private pond on Sonoma Mountain, creating a multifunctional water feature that provides recreational value while supporting habitat development and groundwater recharge. The comprehensive project encompassed both technical engineering requirements and sophisticated landscape design elements.

Location: Sonoma County, CA
Client: Private Landowner

The project scope included the creation of multiple recreational zones around the pond, including sand beaches, a boulder point, and a stream with boulder grotto. A network of paths and a footbridge provide access throughout the site, while carefully planned landscape areas create a natural transition to the surrounding environment. The design integrates water quality features including recirculation and aeration systems to maintain ecological health.

DESIGN

Through an iterative design process guided by client feedback, PCI developed detailed plans for the pond's infrastructure and aesthetic elements. The design team focused on creating seamless transitions between built and natural features, incorporating technical requirements for drainage and stability while maintaining the desired aesthetic character. Material selection emphasized both durability and visual integration with the existing landscape.

permitting

Working within regulatory frameworks, PCI managed all necessary permits and compliance requirements, including the development and implementation of a Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan. The team coordinated with technical consultants to ensure all aspects of the project met or exceeded regulatory standards while maintaining the design vision.

Implementation

The construction phase began with substantial earthwork and embankment development, followed by the installation of critical infrastructure including liner systems, subdrains, and spillways. Implementation of the landscape design included careful grading, installation of irrigation systems, and establishment of native plant communities. The team coordinated the sequential installation of hardscape elements including the boulder features, beach areas, and circulation paths, ensuring proper integration with both the technical systems and planted areas.
