Fitch Mountain Park and Open Space Preserve Management Plan, Access Design, and Regulatory Compliance
Project Details
For this iconic peak adjacent to the town of Healdsburg, PCI developed the Fitch Mountain Park and Open Space Preserve Management Plan and CEQA document. Work began in 2016 to conduct a natural resource assessment, develop a management plan, work with local fire agency representatives to plan fuel reduction while protecting natural resources, and develop conceptual public access improvement plans that protect sensitive resources. PCI Ecological also prepared a CEQA Initial Study, secured permits and a Mitigated Negative Declaration for the project.
Full design for initial public access improvements, including an accessible entry to this steep landscape, was completed in 2023 and construction of the first phase of improvements was completed in spring 2024.
Location: Sonoma County, CA
Client: City of Healdsburg
New public access elements identified in the Fitch Mountain Park and Open Space Preserve Management Plan include a trailhead with accessible parking, gathering/interpretive area terraced into the hill slope with concrete retaining walls, rock seat walls, two new pedestrian bridges, and an accessible trail system. Resource enhancement elements include stabilization of an eroding gully and several headcuts, new footbridges and stairs to improve access and reduce impacts to habitat, and revegetation with native species. The project also renovated an existing dog park with accessibility improvements and a new shade structure.
